From Middle Dutch smade, from Proto-Germanic *smēhijaną (to despise, belittle), from Proto-Indo-European *smēyg- (small, thin, delicate). See also Old Norse smá (to scorn), Proto-Germanic *smikraz (fine, fair).[1]
