Etymology

Apparently from Middle High German steigen (“to raise”), causative of stīgen (“to rise”). The latter would yield stijje in Ripuarian (as in the Siegerland dialect). Moselle Franconian staaje also requires Middle High German -ei(g)-. Accordingly, the Rheinisches Wörterbuch attests an older weak participle jesteech. The strong form and all modern usage must be based on German steigen.
