Inherited from Middle French tavaiolle, from Italian tovagliola (napkin), diminutive of tovaglia (tablecloth), from Medieval Latin toallia, toacula, duvahila, toacla (towel), from Frankish *þwahilu (cloth). Doublet of touaille.
