From Proto-Aslian *(ʔa)tiɛʔ (earth), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁iʔ ~ *t₁ih ~ *t₁iəh (earth; ground). Cognate with Mon တိ (ti), Khmer ដី (dəy), Bahnar teh.
