From Proto-Bahnaric *-ʦaŋ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kt₂aŋ (“bitter”). Cognate with Sedang xáng, Nyaheun daŋ, Vietnamese đắng, Pacoh atáng, Khasi kthang, Bolyu tɕaŋ⁵³ and Mon က္တၚ် (kətɛŋ).
