Etymology

Probably a calque of Chinese 龍捲／龙卷 (long quyển, literally “dragon roll”), equivalent to vòi (“hose; tube”) +‎ rồng (“dragon”). Compare Japanese 竜巻 (tatsumaki).

     During the VTV Impression Awards, the photo of a Chinese vessel blasting high-pressure water at a Vietnamese vessel in the waters near the Paracel Islands, which was aired on the 19-o'-Clock News, beat other nominations and took the Impressive News Photo award. This award was earned by the Current Events Divisions of the Danang and Hue Centers for Vietnamese Television.
