From Proto-Slavic *veselъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wéselas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wésus. Cognate with Upper Sorbian wjesoły, Polish wesoły, Czech veselý, Old Church Slavonic веселъ (veselŭ), and Russian весёлый (vesjólyj).
