Etymology

Learned borrowing from Koine Greek ὕφος (húphos, weaving, fabric), from ὑφή (huphḗ, web) +‎ -ος (-os, action noun suffix). For the "linguistic register" sense, semantic loan from English register; for the "expression" sense, semantic loan from French style.[1]
