From a turkic language (either Turkish makreme or Crimean Tatar maxrama) from Arabic مِقْرَمَة (miqrama, ornamental fringe, embroidered veil),[1] from مِقْرَم (miqram, bedspread), from قَرَمَ (qarama, to gnaw), from Proto-Semitic *q-r-m.
