Perhaps derived from Proto-Turkic *tïgïŕ (“narrow, confined”).
Cognate with Karachay-Balkar тыгъырыкъ (tığırıq, “narrow; a small, mean house; blind alley”), Karaim тыгъырык (tïğïrïq, “wild animal's lair”).
