Etymology[edit]

Reduplicated from Proto-Indo-European *gelǵʰ-, *gl(a)ǵʰ-. Cognate with Sanskrit गर्हते (garhate, to complain), Avestan 𐬔𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰- (gərəz-, to lament, weep), German klagen.

  1. to yelp, make a supplicating yelp as of hunger (said of dog)
