Etymology[edit]

Uncertain, but usually regarded as a non-Semitic Afroasiatic loanword, see Akkadian 𒄠𒋛 (pīru).

Other Semitic cognates include Aramaic פִּילָא (pīlā) and Arabic فِيل (fīl). Compare also Old Armenian փիղ (pʻił), Persian پیل (pil), Sanskrit पीलु (pīlu).
