Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Middle Persian ʾmwlc-ytn' (āmurzīdan, to forgive, to pity, to have mercy on), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥žd- (to forgive, spare, to pity).

Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬲𐬛- (mərəžd-, to have pity, to forgive), Parthian 'mwjd, Sanskrit मृडति (mṛḍati).
