Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (hmwhtn', hmwc-, hmwz- /hāmmōxtan, hāmmōz-/, to teach, learn), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *mauč (to learn, teach).

The Iranian root is perhaps abstracted from Proto-Iranian *ham-Hauč, from Proto-Iranian *ham- (together) + Proto-Iranian *Hauč (learning), the latter a denominal form of Proto-Iranian *yauč (to learn, teach), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ewk- (to be accustomed).

Direct cognate with Northern Kurdish hêvotin (to teach); outside of Iranian, compare Sanskrit उच् (uc, to take pleasure, be accustomed), Old Armenian ուսանիմ (usanim, to learn), Lithuanian jùnkti (to learn), Polish uczyć (to teach; to learn), Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌷𐍄𐍃 (biūhts, accustomed to).
