[edit]Derived from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀞𑀸𑀡 (ṭhāṇa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna, “place, station”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stáHnam, from Proto-Indo-European stéh₂-no-m, from *steh₂- (“to stand”).
Doublet of स्थान (sthān), a tatsama, and of -स्तान (-stān), a Persian loanword.
