Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀲𑀸𑀭𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀺 (vāsāratti) with metathesis, from Sanskrit वर्षारात्रि (varṣārātri, “rainy season”). Related to बरसना (barasnā, “to rain”).
