Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀪𑀸𑀤𑀺 (bhādi), from Sanskrit भाति (bhā́ti, to shine, gleam), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáHti, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéh₂-ti. Cognate to Marathi भावणे (bhāvṇe), Gujarati ભાવવું (bhāvvũ).
