Etymology[edit]

महा- (mahā-, great, grand) +‎ गठबंधन (gaṭhbandhan, alliance).

Coined in 2015 to refer to the alliance between the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Janata Dal (United), and Indian National Congress to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly election. Since generalized to any such alliance among the opposition.
