Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀦𑀺𑀕𑀺𑀮𑀤𑀺 (*nigiladi), from Sanskrit *निगिलति (nigilati), a variant of निगलति (nigalati, swallows). Cognate with Pali niggilati and Nepali निल्नु (nilnu). Doublet of निगलना (nigalnā). On the assimilation of initial n > l in Hindi based on the following l, consider the development of नन्हा (nanhā).
