Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Marathi वाळू (vāḷū), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀮𑀼𑀆 (vāluā) (with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀉𑀓𑀸- (-ukā-)), from Sanskrit वालुका (vālukā). Cognate with Hindi बालू (bālū), Odia ବାଲି (bali). Related to वाळणे (vāḷṇe, to dry).
