Etymology 1[edit]
From Old Khmer មមី (mamī, “horse (zodiac)”), from Vietic. Compare Thai มะเมีย (má-miia) and Vietnamese ngựa.
The medial -m- originated from the progressive assimilation of -ŋ-, due to the labial minor syllable: *m-ŋ- > m-m-. The similar phenomenon also occurred with មមែ (mɔmɛɛ). See Ferlus (2013) for more.[1]
Noun[edit]
