Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From (gil, road) +‎ (-s-, genitive interfix; omitted from the spelling, but this causes the tense phonation of the following consonant) +‎ (ga, side).

First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 긼〮ᄀᆞᇫ〯 (Yale: kíl-s-kǒz).
