Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Sino-Korean word from 辯護士 (lawyer, solicitor, counsel, attorney, barrister), an orthographic borrowing from Japanese 弁護士(べんごし) (bengoshi). Cognate with Jeju 벤호사 (benhosa), Hakka 辯護士辩护士 (phien-fu-sṳ), and Min Nan 辯護士辩护士 (piān-hō͘-sū, piǎn-hō͘-sǐr).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈpjɘ(ː)nβo̞sʰa̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
