Etymology[edit]

Sino-Korean word from 病院, from (sickness) + (house). An orthographic borrowing from Japanese 病院(びょういん) (byōin) and cognate with Jeju 벵완 (beng'wan).

    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
