Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seon'ga gwigam eonhae (禪家龜鑑諺解 / 선가귀감언해), 1610 (Songgwangsa ed.), as Early Modern Korean 사라오다 (Yale: salawota). From 살아 (sara, “sara”), infinitive form of 살다 (salda, “to live”) + 오다 (oda, “to have been doing”).
