álaʼ (hand) + -zhoozh (perfective verb stem meaning a group of slender things that are arranged side-by-side in parallel), from Proto-Athabaskan *zhu̓zh, from Pre-Proto-Athabaskan *shuʼsh (possibly meaning to “move or lie in a bunch or pile”).
