Borrowed from Phoenician 𐤁𐤓𐤕 (bērūt, Beirut), from Proto-West Semitic *biʾrāt- (wells). Doublet of Βηρώθ (Bērṓth, Beeroth) from Biblical Hebrew בְּאֵרוֹת (bəʾērōṯ).
