Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἅλως (hálōs, “disk of the sun or moon; ring of light around the sun or moon; threshing floor with its surrounding threshold; disk of a shield”). Compare the inherited doublet αλώνι (alóni), from a diminutive.
