From Ancient Greek ἀποτυχία (apotukhía) from the verb ἀποτυγχάνω (apotunkhánō). By surface analysis, απο- (apo-) +‎ τύχ(η) (tých(i)) +‎ -ία (-ía). See the ancient τύχη f (túkhē, luck).
