Etymology[edit]

According to Stephanus of Byzantium, a Carian word related to γίσσα (gíssa, stone). Furnée compares Georgian ხრეში (xreši, gravel) and κίσηρις (kísēris, pumice stone). In any case, the word is a loan, either from an Anatolian language or from Pre-Greek.
