From Ancient Greek ἡμέρᾱ (hēmérā), lengthened form of ἦμαρ (êmar, day), from Proto-Hellenic *ā́mər, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₃mr̥ (heat), from *h₂eh₃- (be hot, burn).
