Etymology

Possibly the Moors' native name (from a dialect of Berber), compare Central Atlas Tamazight ⵎⵖⵓⵔ (mɣur, big); or from Proto-Indo-European *mergʷ- (to flicker; to darken; to be dark), cognate to Proto-Germanic *merkuz (dark) and Albanian murg (dark).
