Ancient Greek

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From earlier *ποικιλός (*poikilós), with retraction of the accent by Wheeler's law; from Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ- (to mark, embroider, color, paint) + -λός (-lós).[1]
[2] Also found as a Mycenaean Greek anthroponym 𐀡𐀑𐀫𐀦 (po-ki-ro-qo, Ποικίλοψ (Poecilops)). From stem *poik-, ποῖκ‑ος + -ίλος (compare ὀργίλος, ναυτίλος). Also πικρός (pikrós) is of the same root.
