Ancient Greek

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Traditionally connected with Old Norse stúfr (tree stump) and Latvian stups (broom). According to Beekes, a Pre-Greek origin is a good possibility due to the presence of the byform στύμος (stúmos).
