Etymology

Substantivized form of Proto-Slavic *gręzьnъ (“muddy, sludgy”) or from *gręzenь. Akin to Ukrainian грузь (hruzʹ, “swamp”), Polish grąz (“bog, mire”).

Nowadays mainly attested in toponyms.
