Erzya[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *inši(mi), possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *inžinmī (whence Lithuanian įžymì ((well)known). Cognate with Moksha инжи (inži, guest). More distant cognates include Finnish ihminen (human, man), Estonian inimene (human being, person) (both are from Proto-Finnic *inhiminen). Koivulehto suggests an earlier Proto-Indo-European etymology for Finnic and Mordvinic (Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥h).
