From Proto-Turkic *küŕen (weasel, ferret).

Cognate with Kumyk гёзен (gözen, marten), Kyrgyz күзөн (küzön), Khakas кӱзен (küzen), Southern Altai кӱзен (küzen). Akin to Hungarian görény and Nor Nakhichevan Armenian գյուջեն (gyuǰen), գուջեն (guǰen), Turkic borrowings.
