From о- (o-, around) +‎ колесо́ (kolesó, wheel) +‎ -ица (-ica). Compare околеси́ть (okolesítʹ, to talk nonsense, to speak in a roundabout way, to beat around the bush) (also околёсить (okoljósitʹ)), околёсок (okoljósok, nonsense). Sense derivation is "detour" → "roundabout speech" → "nonsense".
