Etymology

From Persian اوستا (ustâ) / استاد (ostâd). Doublet of остаз (ostaz).

Note that the first form in Persian may have been reborrowed from a Turkic source.

Cognate with Tatar оста (osta, master, craftsman), Kazakh ұста (ūsta, master; blacksmith), Kyrgyz уста (usta, master; blacksmith), Uzbek usta (master, professional), Uyghur ئۇستا (usta, master, professional), Turkish usta (master).
