From прилага́ть (prilagátʹ, to append, to adject) +‎ -тельный (-telʹnyj, verbal adjective suffix), a calque of Latin adjectīvus.

Usage notes

As an adjective, прилага́тельный (prilagátelʹnyj) does not exist on its own. It is only used as part of the term и́мя прилага́тельное (ímja prilagátelʹnoje) (or прилага́тельное (prilagátelʹnoje) for short), and was coined specifically for this purpose.
