From щит (ščyt, shield) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ поді́бний (podíbnyj, similar), a calque of Ancient Greek θῠρεοειδής (thureoeidḗs, shield-shaped). Compare Belarusian шчытападо́бны (ščytapadóbny).
