Inherited from Old East Slavic ꙗсли (jasli), from Proto-Slavic *jasli, from earlier Proto-Slavic *ědsli-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ēd-. Related to Russian есть (jestʹ, to eat), Russian еда́ (jedá, food), Russian яд (jad), Russian я́ство (jástvo), Russian я́стель (jástelʹ, eater).
