Etymology[edit]
Possibly from Ottoman Turkish زرلامق (zırlamak, “to keep up a continuous noise, to whine”), with the semantic development "to whine, to make a noise" to "to be obvious, to be impossible to hide or ignore" to "huge, unpleasantly big". This semantic range is also partially seen in the related word զռալ (zṙal, “to bray like a donkey, to cry out; to be obvious, to be revealed”).
