Cognates include Sanskrit तञ्च् (tañc-, “to draw together, contract”), Persian تنجیدن (tanjidan, “to squeeze”), تنگ (tang, “narrow”), Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬑𐬨𐬀 (taxma, “brave, mighty”), Lithuanian tankus (“close, tight”), German dicht and English tight.
