From Aeolic Greek *μαγνᾱ́της (*magnā́tēs) for Attic Greek μαγνήτης (magnḗtēs), μαγνῆτις (magnêtis, lodestone) from a toponym of *Μαγνᾱσία (*Magnāsía) for Attic Μᾰγνησῐ́ᾱ (Magnēsíā) either of whose referents is in the Aeolic language area.
