Dimunitive of کانھ (kānh), from Prakrit 𑀓𑀡𑁆𑀳 (kaṇha), from Sanskrit कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇá), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kr̥šnás (black), from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥snós (black). Doublet of کرشن (kirśan) and کشن (kiśan). Cognate to Assamese কানু (kanu), কানাই (kanai), Bengali কান (kano), কানাই (kanai), Gujarati કાનો (kāno), કાનુડો (kānuḍo).
