Etymology[edit]
From a variant of Aramaic אִיסְטְוָונָא (ʾesṭwānā, “column, pillar”), from Middle Persian [script needed] (stwn' /stūn/, “column, pillar”); also borrowed into Arabic أُسْطُوَانَة (ʔusṭuwāna).
