Etymology

From Aramaic שְׁבָט (šəḇāṭ), from Akkadian 𒌚𒀾 (Šabāṭum, literally month of wheat (i.e. the start of harvest season)); compare Turoyo ܐܷܫܘܷܛ (ëšwëṭ), also borrowed into Hebrew שְׁבָט (sh'vát, Shevat) and Arabic شُبَاط (šubāṭ, February).
