Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘥𑘜𑘜𑘹 (bhaṇaṇe), 𑘦𑘿𑘮𑘜𑘜𑘹 (mhaṇaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑀡𑀇 (bhaṇaï), Sanskrit भनति (bhánati), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰ-né-h₂-ti. Cognate to Konkani म्हण्चे (mhaṇce), Gujarati ભણવું (bhaṇvũ), Nepali भन्नु (bhannu), Awadhi मने (mane).
