Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀭𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀛𑀤𑀺 (rijjhadi), from Sanskrit ऋध्यति (ṛdhyati, increases, prospers), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hr̥dʰyáti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hr̥dʰyáti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃r̥dʰyéti, from *h₃erdʰ-. Cognate with Pali ijjhati and Marathi रिझणे (rijhṇe).
